THE STATE OF XR IN 2025XR hardware is finally good enough. The tools have matured and generative AI has removed much of the hard work. XR is going mainstream and in order to truly conquer the mainstream, XR Master Builders are creating diverse, compelling content that users everywhere can’t resist. At the same time, AI needs XR to keep getting smarter—XR gives AI the senses to perceive and interact with the real world. Together, this power couple is accelerating XR’s advancement and adoption across every sector, every niche. And leading the charge? The Built Environment—where XR isn’t just a tool, it’s becoming the new foundation for how we design, build, manage, and live.

BEYOND THE SCAN: LESSONS FROM BUILDING A CREATIVE BUSINESS IN CHAOSIn an industry that often celebrates highlight reels, this session takes a different approach—offering an honest look at the unpredictable journey of building SCANable, one of the most trusted 3D and 4D capture companies in entertainment. From humble beginnings in traditional land surveying to pioneering laser scanning at its inception, Travis Reinke shares the realities of carving out a niche business—through failures, risks, and last-minute pivots—along with lessons learned from collaborations with major studios including Marvel, Disney, Netflix, Amazon, and others. This isn’t just a collection of project stories; it’s a candid exploration of what it truly takes to succeed—or more accurately, how to fail gracefully, learn from those failures, and, most importantly, keep moving forward.

SCAN-TO-BIM AT SCALE: PRIORITISING METADATA OVER GEOMETRY FOR FM & THERMAL ANALYSISWhile most BIM workflows have historically focused on geometry and visualisation, managing large educational estates demands a different approach—one that prioritises metadata as the core asset. At Building Spatial Intelligence, we’ve developed a scalable Scan-to-BIM pipeline that emphasises information-rich models for facilities management, thermal analysis, and long-term estate optimisation. In this session, we’ll share lessons from scanning and modelling hundreds of UK school buildings, explaining why traditional LOD-centric approaches often fail to meet the real-world needs of FM teams. This session will cover why metadata—not geometry—is the key to actionable BIM for FM, and attendees will walk away with a clear understanding of how to build lean, information-first BIM models that support real-world decision-making—and how to scale these processes across large, diverse estates.

ROBOTIC INNOVATIONS THAT IMPROVE DATA CAPTURE & INCREASE
FIELD SAFETY
Leveraging robotics in both semi-autonomous and autonomous applications deployed into existing infrastructure, structures, and new construction, AECOM is enhancing our data collection methods, while simultaneously improving employee safety, made possible by rapid prototyping, custom programming, and the RTC360. Given a high-risk project, we designed and fabricated two robots that assisted in our field activities, both of which were conceived on the premise of versatility and personal safety. Employing robots to mitigate human risk and perform planned and exploratory tasks can expand the capabilities your team and become an integral part of your field equipment.

THE CRITICAL ROLE OF ESTABLISHING COMPREHENSIVE STANDARDS FOR SUCCESSFUL DIGITAL TWIN IMPLEMENTATION / AIRPORT CASE STUDYOver the last few years, BIM has changed how we analyze, design, build, manage, operate, and maintain projects. Globally, the biggest design and construction companies have adopted BIM, which has been key in developing and executing their projects today. Airports utilize large amounts of space and support vast infrastructure and numerous buildings, much like a small city. However, the complex operational challenges combined with the size make an airport the perfect environment for using BIM.

SEMICONDUCTOR FABRICATION DIGITAL TWIN BACKBONE DEVELOPMENT & FEDERATED LEARNINGDigital twins must contain at a minimum a physical and virtual asset that describes a given process. Within the semiconductor industry, these digital twins are typically constructed in-house and not shared within the larger community due to privacy concerns. This could create stagnation as techniques are not shared within the broader industry. To enable the ability to share information, rather than proprietary data, well established Federated Learning techniques could be used within the semiconductor industry to create a shared virtual asset. More specifically, this involves creating an Artificial Intelligence (AI) model where the training is conducted locally within an organization rather than a central repository where proprietary data could be at risk. As a result, Federated Learning has the potential to provide unrealized insights into processes within the semiconductor industry as AI model can ingest much more data than a single organization can provide. This talk will focus on the application of Federated Data, Learning, and Analytics to semiconductor assets through the SMART USA Initiative.

LEVERAGING DIGITAL TWINS TO OPTIMIZE T&D ASSET MANAGEMENT DECISION-MAKINGThis session aims to highlight recent efforts to optimize AM-decision making through the use of a digital twin, which brings together both spatial asset data, as well as locations that are being impacted by external events (e.g. extreme weather regions, excessive capacity regions, etc.). A turn-key AM analytics framework was developed leveraging machine learning and AI technologies, whereby current-state design limitations from the digital twin are first identified in a turn-key manner.

HIGH-ACCURACY MAPPING WITH CONSUMER HARDWAREThe most powerful mobile mapping systems of the next generation are hiding in plain sight. For years, we've overlooked the geospatial potential of the consumer-grade sensors that saturate our daily lives—from the GNSS, IMU, and LiDAR sensors in a smartphone to the integrated cameras of a modern vehicle. This presentation reveals how this ubiquitous hardware can be calibrated and transformed into professional-grade mobile mapping instruments capable of achieving survey-grade accuracy. We will challenge conventional thinking by demonstrating a clear, progressive path from rigorous accuracy assessments of handheld devices to advanced vehicle-based kinematic surveying, all using accessible, off-the-shelf technology. This is the story of how we stop waiting for new tools and start leveraging the geodetic potential of the ones we already have.

BEYOND THE SCAN: CULTIVATING AUTHENTICITY, RELATIONSHIPS, & REPUTATION IN SCAN-TO-BIM PROJECTIn the evolving world of Scan-to-BIM, technical precision and advanced workflows often take center stage. But the true success of these projects hinges on much more than accurate point clouds and clean models. This presentation explores the critical human elements that elevate Scan-to-BIM from a transactional service to a trusted partnership.Through the lens of authenticity, relationships, and reputation, we’ll examine how professionals can build trust, align expectations, and deliver value that goes far beyond the final model. Real-world examples and practical strategies will demonstrate how transparency, empathy, and long-term thinking can drive better outcomes—for clients, teams, and businesses alike.Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or new to Scan-to-BIM, this session will challenge you to think beyond the scan, and to lead your projects with clarity, connection, and credibility.
